Tom found bonsai in 1980 at a class with Art Patznik at Dawes Arboretum.  For many years, he worked with Max Puderbaugh and others caring for the collection at Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus, Ohio. 

He became fairly serious about bonsai pottery after retirement from teaching in the early twenty-first century.  His wheel thrown and hand built bonsai and functional ceramics are made with high fire clays.
